M2M specialist Telit unit Telit Wireless Solutions has agreed to acquire NXP ATOP from NXP Semiconductors for USD 9 million, including USD 2 million in cash and up to 3.3 million Telit shares, subject to certain adjustments upon closing. ATOP is an automotive grade system for vehicle manufacturers which enabes users to implement telematics services like eCall as well as other features in a single package, reducing complexity and minimizing costs in vehicle designs. Ecall is an European initiative to bring rapid assistance to motorists involved in a collision anywhere in the EU. The acquisition of ATOP includes sales, engineering and support staff, to be integrated into Telit's automotive organization. The company said the deal will extend its market reach. Telit has agreed to appoint someone from NXP's automotive business unit as a non-executive director of Telit, on closing. The transaction is expected to complete in the first quarter.
