The GR64 has been plagued with bugs from its release. I know of many people who have had issues with the on board scripting language. The first type approved firmware for the modem was only released a few weeks ago. I have been flashing the firmware in my two samples if and when the firmware was released. I get the "SHUDOWN COMPLETE" message when connected to windows and using Hyper terminal. The Wavecom FAE came to assist me on Thursday and he too got the same message when connected to his laptop. The fact that this Modem latches up and the power to the modem has to be cycled also has nothing to do with the PPP stack. Until Rev 2 release was issued, the onboard TCPIP stack on the modem was also unstable.
All of this came about because of two factors - the lead free drive which came into effect on 1 July in Europe - the GM47 was not a lead free part. Secondly Sony Ericsson was purchased by Wavecom. As a direct result of this merger, no documentation exists explaining how to migrate from GM47 to GR64. Nothing exists detailing the differences in interfacing the two parts. For example, the GM47 used to pull one of the handshake lines high when it was initialised and registered on the network. I made use of this feature on one of my products. The GR64 does not do this.
Another deviation is the AT+CGDCONT command. On the GM47 AT+CGDCONT,1,"ip","internet" was sufficient. On the GR64 it is now AT+CGDCONT=1,"ip","internet","0.0.0.0",1,1 or something along those lines. On the GM47 you could dial in with a comma in the dial string ie:ATDT,"number" on the GR64 you cannot.
To sum it up there are numerous problems that currently exist with the GR64 that must still be resolved. I for one will NEVER design a product onto a board, albeit only for SMS when it hangs up. Many of the support engineers that worked for Sony are now employed by Telit in the USA. The fact that the Telit with the same footprint as the GM47 works. That says it all.
