Altium is known for being the first EDA software ever to support Windows natively. Much of the interface and functionality heavily uses the Windows API. The 3D view is a perfect example of this - we use the DirectX API to dynamically render the PCB in real time. Much of the software that supports various OS use porting software or VM wrappers. As you may know, in these cases, the products suffer performance issues because it's not design to take advantage of the OS it's running on and/or the user experience is less than lack luster. Altium recognizes the user desire for us to support Linux and Mac, but as stated for the reasons above this is not a trivial task. There are other forum threads that cover this topic in more detail and it is something that we (Altium) is considering in the future.
Kind regards,
Dan
