Mr ********,
As you correctly say, this is a question we are often asked. We do not claim any particular data rate because it depends very much on the user's system. The rate of 250kb/s is the raw speed within a radio packet, which includes all the 802.1.5.4 overhead such as preamble and addressing. The available channel has to be shared among all ZigBee units on that frequency (which might belong to more than one PAN), and has to include maintenance messages to keep the PAN in operation. Furthermore, some types of data packet need to be acknowledged, and in a noisy system some might sending more than once. Acknowledged data will be slowed down by the time taken for the receiver node to process the data. So you can see that the performance is very difficult to predict.
We have found that when sending unicasts as quickly as possible in a system with only two devices, rates up to 20kb/s are possible. Sending data through a channel gives similar results. However, when I tried sending a file through a channel using xmodem protocol, the rate dropped to about 8kb/s. The fastest method is the AT+RDATAB command, which broadcasts its data without handshaking, error checking or encryption - all these features were sacrificed for speed.
Please contact me if you have any further questions.
Best regards,
David Chalmers
